map of tokushima prefecture

Tokushima Prefecture is located on the eastern side of Shikoku Island and is linked by bridge to Japan’s main island, Honshu. It is the traditional starting point of the famous ‘Shikoku Pilgrimage Trail’ which incorporates the 88 sacred temples visited by the great Buddhist Priest Kokai over 1,200 years ago.

Tokushima is also the home of the world-famous Awa Dance Festival which is held every year between the 12th and 15th of August and attracts visitors from all over the world.

Another main attraction of Tokushima is Mt. Bizan with 360 degree far-reaching views from the summit. It is widely regarded as one of Japan’s most beautiful spots for the stunning night time scenery.

Other places in Tokushima of natural beauty and well worth visiting are the Iya Valley and Mt. Tsurugi. The former is widely considered as one of Japan’s ‘Three Hidden Valleys’ and is blessed with spectacular mountain scenery, traditional thatched roof homes and a way of life in complete contrast to the hustle and bustle of daily city life.

How to get there

Air - Tokushima Awadori Airport is situated north of the city centre and takes around 25 minutes by train. The airport has regular daily flights between Tokyo and one flight a day from and to Fukuoka. Click here for its English website.

Awa Odori Kaikan - The world-famous Awa Dance can be viewed all year round at this dance hall. On the first floor are a wide variety of souvenir shops with many locally hand-made products and on the fifth floor is the ropeway to the top of Mt. Bizan.

Whirlpool viewing from the Naruto Bridge - The spectacular whirlpools in the Naruto Straits can be enjoyed from several vantage points, one of which is the observatory built below the Naruto Bridge.
