Shiga Prefecture is located in the centre of Japan and within easy access to many major cities and airports.

The prefecture is home to Lake Biwa, one of the world’s oldest lakes dating back more than four million years.

Another major tourist attraction is Hikone Castle, widely considered as one of the most beautiful castles in Japan, and one of only four castles designated as a national treasure. From the central tower, visitors are treated to a stunning view of Lake Biwa.

To the east of the capital is Koka Village, the birthplace of the famous ninja warriors where visitors can step back in time and experience first-hand the secrets of the Ninja world.

How to get there

Rail - Shiga is very easily accessible from Kansai International Airport and can be reached by the JR Haruka Special Express train in less than 90 minutes.

Genkyuen Garden is an exquisitely arranged Japanese-style garden built in 1677 and located within the grounds of Hikone Castle. There is a tea-house in the gardens overlooking a beautiful pond where visitors can enjoy traditional Japanese tea.


Hikone Castle dates back to 1604 and is only one of four castles in Japan designated as National Treasures.


Lake Biwa is one of the oldest freshwater lakes in the world, dating back almost 4 million years and is a "must-see" attraction for visitors to Shiga prefecture.


Enryaku Ji dates back to the 8th century and is considered to be one of the most important spritual centres in Japan. The site is located on Mt. Hieizan and can be accessed by cable car or shuttle bus.
