Saga Prefecture - 佐賀県

Saga is located in the north-western pat of Kyushu and is best known for producing high quality ceramics and porcelain particularly in the towns of Arita, Karatsu and Imari.

Another famous produce of Saga is its ‘Saga Beef’ which is one of the highest graded types of wagyu (Japanese cattle) in the country. Lovers of quality beef come from all over the world just to savour the distinct flavour.

There are many festivals taking place throughout the year, the main one being the Karatsu Kunchi Festival, which lasts for three days and is held during the first week in November.

Some of the many sightseeing attractions of Saga are Karatsu Castle, Kiyomizu Waterfall, Yutoku Inari Shrine, Ureshino ‘Onsen’ Hot Springs, Saga Castle History Museum and the Yoshinogari Historical Park.

How to get there

Air - Saga airport operates daily flights from and to both Haneda and Narita airports in Tokyo. Click here for its English website.

The Nanatsugama Caves literally translated means ‘seven cauldrons’ and these are designated as a national natural monument. The widest cave is three metres and can be accessed by boat during high tide.


Karatsu Castle - The present castle was reconstructed in 1966 and is considered as a symbol of Karatsu city. The fifth tier of the tower is an observatory with stunning views across the Sea of Genkai.


Karatsu Kunchi Festival is a major festival held annually over three days from the 2nd to the 4th of November. The origins of the festival date back to over 400 years and attracts up to half a million visitors to the region every year.


Kiyomizu No Taki is a spectacular waterfall with a 75-metre sheer drop next to the Kenryu-ji Buddhist temple which dates back to 1627. At the base of the waterfall is a garden pavilion where visitors can relax and enjoy the stunning views.
