Osaka City and its surrounding prefecture is one of Japan’s most popular destinations and one of Japan’s modern urban prefectures. The prefecture is situated around the beautiful Osaka bay and features numerous attractions unique to the area. The city is second only to Tokyo in size and is considered the centre of Japan’s youth with many people dressing in beautiful clothes inspired by manga, music and the Visual Kei scene.

The prefecture is known for its delicious specialities such as Takoyaki (fried batter balls with Octopus), Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancakes) and Kakigori (a dessert made with shaved ice and syrup) which can be sampled in Osaka’s many wonderful restaurants and food stalls.

Sport is also a major influence in Osaka prefecture with football, baseball, basketball, volleyball and rugby teams all competing in top flight competitions, presenting many opportunities to see live matches.

The Kansai International Airport, in the middle of Osaka bay makes travel to and from the city very easy.

How to get there

Air - There are two main airports in Osaka both of which operate flights to Tokyo and other major Japanese cities. Kansai International is located 50 kilometres from the city centre and takes under an hour to reach by train. Click here for its English website.

Universal Studios Japan - This theme park is one of Japan’s most visited attractions and home to many thrilling rides, live shows and parades and features some of the world’s most well-loved movie themes, including Harry Potter, Jaws, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park and Spiderman.


Dotonburi is a bustling, visually stunning area of Osaka City that follows the Dōtonbori canal on either side. The area is illuminated by enormous neon billboards and is a popular destination for shopping and dining.


Tempozan Ferris Wheel is a fantastic and fun way to view Osaka from above. The wheel has a height of over 112 metres and offers superb views of the Bay and beyond.


Osaka Castle is an iconic landmark and has deep historical relevance in the 16th century unification of Japan. There is also an on-site museum for visitors wishing to learn about Japan's history and the importance of the castle.
